Who We Are

Wittorf ChapelAt German Lutheran Heritage of Northwest Ohio (GLH), it is our desire to preserve our rich German Lutheran heritage by collecting and sharing stories and materials which reflect our German Lutheran beginnings and the transition of these early settlers to becoming Americans in their new home.

Pictured at left is the 400-year-old Wittorf chapel in Visselhövede Parish, Germany.

We encourage the various congregations in our area to preserve their translated German Church records, and we provide one location for easy access to those records as you research your own personal ancestry.

History

In March of 2001, a group of German descendant families met to see if enough organizational interest could be generated in order to preserve our Northwest Ohio Germanic Heritage.  The group decided on the name German Lutheran Heritage Association (GLH) because many of Northwest Ohio’s 19th-century immigrants came from Northern Germany, which by government decree, adhered to Evangelical Lutheranism at that time.
